Praxis I Tests for Teachers

Candidates for Maine teaching certificates must achieve passing scores on the Praxis I tests of basic skills, also known as the PPST or Pre-professional Skills Test. The Praxis I test consists of three subtests, with multiple choice questions in reading, writing and math plus an essay. The Educational Testing Service, publishers
of the Praxis I tests, provides sample tests online (to see these Tests, click on this link and scroll down to the black bar with “Session /Test Code” . Click on the Test Code number next to the Praxis I/PPST test to see the Adobe Acrobat reader file) .
Passing scores for the test are different for certificates requiring a bachelors’ degree and for those which do not. Each state sets its own passing scores, and the passing scores for Maine are among the highest in the country:

Certificates                       with Degree                          without Degree
Reading                                   176                                          173
Writing                                    175                                          168
Math                                        175                                          172

Fees for the Praxis I test include a required $40 registration fee for each test date, plus $30 for each of the three subtests for the paper-and-pencil test. Fees for the computerized version of the test include the $40 registration fee, plus $85 for each of the three subtests, with a discounted fee of $120 for three subtests if taken on the same day.
